Bhavin Rawal, PhD, MBT, P.Biol

Program Lead, Regulatory Affairs

Dr. Bhavin Rawal has a proven track record over the past decade and has demonstrated both his passion and ability in the commercialization of new medical device technology. Prior to joining Clinexus, Bhavin held management positions in medical device and environmental companies.

Dr. Rawal is a motivated professional with a diverse background combining applied scientific and business skills. He has successfully led and completed an International project involving countries like Germany, Czech Republic and Israel.

Bhavin has received training in technology commercialization as an AHFMR (Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research) intern after completing Master in Biomedical Technology at the University of Calgary with a focus on business processes. During the training, Dr. Rawal’s focus was on developing a medical device using a company's platform technology and during that gained hands-on product development and technology commercialization experience.  He collaborated on the manufacture of new products including the world’s first commercial biofilm susceptibility kit which was then approved by Health Canada.

Dr. Rawal is skilled at providing due diligence on technology commercialization efforts to ensure that the goals are achievable by identifying, correcting, and preventing anticipated roadblocks in product development stages. He is knowledgeable in product design, product prototyping, process prototyping, validation testing, regulatory affairs and compliance to implementation of ISO 13485.

Bhavin spends his free time reading, hiking, playing with his kids and kick boxing. He volunteers at the local school.


Ernst M. Bergmann, PhD

Program Lead, Health Technology Development

Ernst supports clients who are developing health technologies in Alberta, especially medical devices and assistive technologies. Ernst is also the contact for our clients in Northern Alberta through Clinexus' offices at the Research Transition Facility on the Campus of the University of Alberta and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.

Ernst came to Clinexus from BERRI where he worked with medical device companies developing their products. He has several years of experience developing medical devices.  Prior to that Ernst was the Executive Director of the Alberta Synchrotron Institute and involved in the development of the X-ray facilities at the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon and at the Advanced Light Source at the Berkeley National Laboratory.

Ernst holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of California and has a background in protein chemistry, virus biology and structure-based drug design. He spends as much as possible of his spare time climbing, paddling, skiing and hunting in the foot hills and mountains of Alberta.


Julie P. Rezler, MA, BSc

Program Lead, Business Programs

Julie has a proven track record in the Health Technology and Life Sciences sectors both as a management consultant and as a senior level leader with companies in the US and Canada. She brings a diverse background that includes corporate development, strategic planning, investor relations and business development from both public and private companies ranging small and medium sized enterprises as well as large pharma.  She brings a strong market focus to companies and is able to successfully bridge the gaps among product development, market opportunity and customer need.  Julie has spear-headed and influenced corporate strategy gaining buy-in from executives on three continents – US, Europe and Japan.  She has improved the positioning of products through market research and assessment resulting in higher valuations, enhanced partnering potential and stronger corporate valuations; and she has also worked with executive teams to help raise both public and private equity capital.

Prior to joining these sectors, Julie was an international environmental management consultant headquartered in London, UK.  Her clients included Fortune 500 companies as well as the World Bank, UNEP, International Finance Agency and various national governments.

Julie has successfully worked with corporate and government leadership teams, the medical community, investors, international agencies and NGO’s, and she has extensive international experience in Asia, Africa, Europe and N. America.

Her qualifications include a Masters in Environmental Planning from Nottingham University, UK Postgraduate Studies in Environmental Policy from University of British Columbia, Vancouver and Finance courses from the Hass School of Business, UC San Diego and Licensing Courses from the Licensing Executive Society.

Julie is passionate both about health and the environment. In her spare time she can be found hiking, rock and ice climbing or travelling to remote regions of the world with her husband. She has recently set herself a goal of making a travel film to enter into the Banff Film Festival.


Nana Hutchins, BSc, CPHI(C)

Quality System Coordinator

Nana holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of Alberta, and an After Degree in Environmental Health from Concordia University College. She has also recently received Certification as a Canadian Public Health Inspector from the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspection. Through her studies, Nana has developed strong skills in risk assessment, investigative methods, and infection control and prevention principles. These skills have been geared towards minimizing the risk of illness, infection, and injury to the public; while achieving compliance with the Public Health Act, its Regulations, Standards, and Guidelines.

She brings a foundation of work experience that has involved the planning, implementation, and monitoring of an ISO 13485 Quality Management System for a class II medical device, along with working within an ISO 9001 Quality System environment for several years. Nana has a passion for music and has enjoyed performing with a Caribbean Steel Drum Orchestra for over 20 years, providing Albertans with the sounds of the islands.


Nicole Wilson

Administrative Coordinator

Nicole has 15 years experience in office organization and administration as well as a background in payroll and human resources; several years of her experience have been in the health care research field. Nicole was employee number two at Clinexus and has returned to the team after a few years in the energy sector.

Originally from Victoria, British Columbia, Nicole has lived in Calgary for 3 years. Her interests include, cake decorating, cooking, reading and entertaining her two border collies.


 

Rob Beamish, P.Eng, MEDes, MBA

Executive Director

Rob currently leads Clinexus, the newly formed, pan-provincial initiative for accelerating the growth of health technology companies in Alberta. To accomplish this, Rob is active in the advanced technology sector and works with various stakeholders to help build specific programs that will help accelerate client companies across the province.

Rob's passion for entrepreneurship and developing new businesses is also evident in his previous roles. Prior to Clinexus, Rob was the founder and President of Ellipsis Ventures, a management-consulting firm that specializes in technology commercialization in the ICT, health technology and cleanTech sectors. As part of his practice, Rob held the positions of Director of the EnviroTech Solutions program at Climate Change Central as well as interim CEO for Tecterra, another provincial product commercialization centre. Rob was also a co-founder of Stratavera Partners, a management-consulting firm with a focus on health care management solutions. In the past, Rob has served as Vice President, Operations with Calgary Technologies Inc. and has worked with TransCanada in various technology development and project management roles.

Rob is a Professional Engineer with a civil engineering degree and an MBA from Queen's University as well as a Masters of Environmental Design from the University of Calgary. In his spare time, Rob is active with hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, cooking and volunteer work, but most importantly, he and his wife are busy sharing their passions with their three teenage daughters.
